Top 10 Growing Orchid Tips

Expert advice from Five Cities Orchid Society members

1. Climate is Key

Take advantage of coastal California's Mediterranean climate! Many orchids can grow outdoors year-round with winter lows rarely below 40°F and summer highs rarely above 90°F. Cool summer nights (60-68°F) are perfect for most orchids.

2. Start with Phalaenopsis

Begin your orchid journey with Phalaenopsis (moth orchids). They're forgiving, rebloom easily, and thrive on windowsills. Focus on getting them to rebloom before expanding your collection.

3. Temperature Matters

Even equatorial orchids from altitudes above 3,600 feet can tolerate our cool winter nights. Learn to match the orchid's natural habitat with your growing conditions.

4. Outdoor Growing Success

Cymbidiums, Dendrobiums, Cattleyas, and many others can grow outdoors in frost-free coastal locations. Protect from morning frost and provide shelter from strong winds.

5. Watering Wisdom

Most orchids prefer to dry out slightly between waterings. Use the "ice cube method" for Phalaenopsis - 3 ice cubes weekly. For outdoor orchids, adjust watering based on seasons.

6. Light Requirements

Most orchids prefer bright, indirect light. East-facing windows are ideal. Outdoor orchids need 4-5 hours of filtered sunlight. Avoid direct afternoon sun.

7. Dividing and Repotting

Repot every 2-3 years or when the potting medium breaks down. Spring is the best time. Watch our member demonstration videos for hands-on techniques.

8. Mounting Techniques

Many epiphytic orchids thrive when mounted on wood or cork. This mimics their natural growing conditions and provides excellent drainage.

9. Winter Rest Period

Some orchids like Dendrobiums require a dry winter rest. Reduce watering and stop fertilizing to trigger blooming. Learn which orchids need dormancy periods.
